WordCamp Toronto is tomorrow Saturday Dec. 1st

We wanted to send some important bits of info to get you ready for WordCamp on Saturday. If you are unable to attend, please remember to modify your reservation to give others the chance to register for this informative day-long event bringing dozens of experts together to talk about the latest WordPress advances and online best practices.

Where to Go and When

WordCamp YYZ is at the North York Civic Centre (5100 Yonge St.) which is set back from Yonge St. on the west side and fronted by Mel Lastman’s Square, north of Yonge and Sheppard. For a map click here. There is paid parking on the west side of the building on Beecroft St.

If you are taking transit, get off at North York subway station and take the exit marked Mel Lastman’s Square. The Civic Centre is between the centre for performing arts on the south, a pool on the west and a library on the north. WordCamp is in the lower level. For driving directions click here.

Volunteers arrive at 8 AM and registration begins at 9 AM in the Council Chamber Foyer at the lower level of the Civic Centre. There are many entrances so we will have volunteers in purple t-shirts stationed at the doors to help you navigate this large complex.

Opening remarks will be at 10 AM in Council Chambers with the first session starting at 10:30. You can check out our website for the full session schedule.

WiFi Access

There is free WiFi at the North York Civic Centre but it is spotty in the basement where our sessions are located. To join, you’ll connect to the “City of Toronto” network and accept their terms (no password is required).

Food and Beverage

We will have coffee, tea, drinks, snacks and sandwiches at the event however there may not be sufficient quantities to feed everyone enough to consider it a lunch meal. There are many excellent restaurants on this block so if necessary, you can find many dining options just out the doors of our venue.

Our Sponsors are the Best!

We could not have put this event on without the amazing support of our sponsors. Be sure to say to hi (and thanks!) to them at their tables in the lobby.

Afterparty

We wrap up the day in the Civic Centre at 6 PM and walk 500 feet up Yonge St to Boston Pizza (5170 Yonge St). Please remember to bring your badge in order to enjoy some food, beverages, and great conversation!

…And Finally

Please review the WordCamp Code of Conduct, which you agreed to when you purchased your ticket. It’s extremely important that everyone feel safe and welcome throughout this conference.

That’s all for now — See you tomorrow!

  1. So very disappointed. Bought a ticket for $25 well in advance. I drove in an hour from Kitchener arriving at 9am. Sat through the introduction at 10am. Went to first session at 10:30. All three sessions had too many people. Sat disappointed in the lounge until the next session at 11:30. Again, couldn’t get a seat in any of the rooms. Left before noon so disappointed.

Hats off to all of the good folks who volunteer to run this. But please can you get bigger rooms next year? Please?

    • Hi Rick. Thanks for registering in advance. You should’ve received a refund for the ticket a few weeks ago – did that not come through? We have the venue for free, courtesy of the city. While we’d love to have more space and bigger rooms, we’re doing the best we can with what’s provided. Appreciate the suggestion for next year – we’ll add that to our notes.

    • Rick — our venue is run by the city so we have some limitations especially under a limited budget and with a new team. We did find out about a larger room that can be rented at a very reasonable rate, but AFTER the event occured. Next year we will definitely look at larger rooms for talks and leave the small rooms for demo tracks. Thank you for your support!
