{"id":836,"date":"2018-10-25T13:35:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T17:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2018.toronto.wordcamp.org\/?p=836"},"modified":"2018-11-16T15:43:04","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T20:43:04","slug":"what-to-expect-at-wordcamp-toronto-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toronto.wordcamp.org\/2018\/what-to-expect-at-wordcamp-toronto-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"What to expect at WordCamp Toronto 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WordCamp Toronto is an annual, volunteer-run conference for all things WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by members of our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/meetup.com\/wptoronto\">local WordPress meetup group<\/a>, it brings together WordPress users of all skill levels and experiences from around the Toronto area (and further away, too).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s WordPress?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordpress.org\">WordPress is free software for building websites.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s more powerful than a site builder service, but easier than writing code. You use <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/themes\/\">themes<\/a> to customize the site&#8217;s appearance, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/\">plugins<\/a> to add new features and functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WordPress is built, managed, and supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\">global community of contributors<\/a>. The community gets together at local gatherings called <a href=\"https:\/\/central.wordcamp.org\/about\/\">WordCamps<\/a>. Ours is just one of hundreds taking place around the world each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should you attend?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New to WordPress? You&#8217;ll love WordCamp Toronto! It&#8217;s a great learning experience for first-time WordPress users. You can&#8217;t beat the value &#8212; it&#8217;s <del>only $25<\/del> FREE for a full day of peer education, sharing, and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already a WordPress user? This is a great chance to build your knowledge even further, and connect with other WordPress experts from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selling WordPress products or services? WordCamp Toronto is an opportunity to find new customers (or hires, or partners!) by <a href=\"https:\/\/2018.toronto.wordcamp.org\/sponsors\/\">sponsoring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/2018.toronto.wordcamp.org\/tickets\/\">attending<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you can expect this year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year we&#8217;re focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/gutenberg\/\">Gutenberg<\/a>, the new post and page editor that&#8217;s bundled with <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/core\/5-0\/\">WordPress 5.0<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This release marks a big change for WordPress, so we&#8217;re preparing sessions for both users and developers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sessions will cover topics like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Preparing for Gutenberg<\/li><li>How to build your first custom Gutenberg block<\/li><li>How plugins are adapting to Gutenberg<\/li><li>What Gutenberg means for the future of WordPress<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll also cover other essential topics like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Migrating from an HTML website to WordPress<\/li><li>Using CSS Grid<\/li><li>Building accessible websites<\/li><li>Copywriting for the web<\/li><li>Using WordPress as part of a digital marketing platform<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Specific sessions are subject to change as we confirm speakers. Subscribe for email updates, and keep tabs on our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wcyyz\">Twitter profile<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/facebook.com\/wcyyz\">Facebook page<\/a> as we publish speaker announcements in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New venue, new voices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re focusing heavily on forging new connections in the community, and giving an opportunity for new voices to be heard from around the GTA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end,&nbsp; WordCamp Toronto 2018 is a smaller, more intimate event than in previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve moved uptown to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_York_Civic_Centre\">North York Civic Centre<\/a> at Mel Lastman Square. We hope that the new location will be more accessible to our neighbours who are driving in from the suburbs, while still&nbsp;being accessible for people taking public transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Related: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/311\/knowledgebase\/kb\/docs\/articles\/311-toronto\/information-and-business-development\/north-york-civic-centre-floor-plan-location-accessibility-directions-hours.html\"><em>Accessibility information about NYCC<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coming in from out of town?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re coming in from out of town, why not make the most of your time here?&nbsp;Attending WordCamp Toronto is a great excuse for checking out our city! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The venue is located directly on the Yonge subway line. Pick up a public transit day pass and you can quickly shuttle yourself around the city via the subway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(We&#8217;ll have some local tips to share soon!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help us make WordCamp Toronto 2018 a success.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We need your help to make this event a great one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the deal: <em>We weren&#8217;t sure that WordCamp Toronto 2018 would even happen this year.<\/em> Our team didn&#8217;t come together until very late in the summer, and we&#8217;re running on a super-tight deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re a month away from the event. During a typical year our speakers would all be announced by now and tickets would nearly be sold out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this isn&#8217;t a typical year.&nbsp;<strong>We need your help spreading the word.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re on Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1456809887796173\/\">RSVP for the event<\/a> and share it with your friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re on Twitter, let others know that you&#8217;re attending and tag your posts with #WCYYZ.
