Featured Speaker: Ryan Welcher

Seeking change from a career as an audio engineer, Ryan graduated from the International Academy of Design and Technology and began working as a web developer. From 2004 to 2011, he ran an independent agency, where he had the pleasure of working with clients such as Denny’s Canada, Veritas Canada, and Canadian music icons Rush.

In 2009, Ryan discovered WordPress while working for Les Stroud – T.V’s Survivorman – and was immediately hooked. Not long after, he released his first plugin for the WordPress community. He began working with WordPress full-time in 2010 when he joined an agency in Ottawa, Ontario; within a year, Ryan became a Senior Web Developer. During his time there, Ryan used WordPress to power large sites, online games, and mobile applications.

Ryan is active in the WordPress community and contributes as often as possible. He loves helping new WordPress developers by giving presentations and answering questions at his local Meetup group.

When he’s not writing code, Ryan is typically found hanging out with his amazing wife, two hilarious kids, and big, shaggy golden-doodle named Blue.

Presentation: A Noob’s Journey To The Core

“I had always wanted to contribute to core but found that learning how to get started, both technically and from a community standpoint, was confusing and frustrating. I wanted to give new contributors some tips based on my experiences to make the process easier and much less confusing.”

What unique perspective are you bringing to this talk?

“Everyone’s story of getting into core is different. This is my story along with tips, tricks and things I’ve learning along the way to help demystify core contribution. I’ll be sharing not only technical information but also practical tips for navigating the waters of core contribution.”

What are you most looking forward to at WordCamp Toronto?

“The opportunity to help others get into core contribution and the chance to meet others in the community!”

What’s one really cool thing people will discover during your session?

“Contributing to core is fun but it’s also confusing and a little intimidating. There are docs you can read but nothing helps like learning from someone else’s mistakes and experiences. Let me share my story of getting into core contribution along with some practical tips learned along the way for getting setup, creating patches and becoming part of the community.”
