Presentation: How to Use CSS3 in WordPress

“CSS is one of my favorite things to code, talk, and teach about, yet I found when I was learning that I had a hard time finding resources on how to use CSS specifically within WordPress. Themes and templates are coded differently than a flat HTML website, and including styles in your website is a little trickier.

I want to make it easier for those wanting to get into development by explaining common jargon and techniques to remove barriers to learning. Also, I’ll get to share some of my favorite CSS tricks and resources which have become invaluable to me and hopefully to you as well!”

What unique perspective are you bringing to this talk?

“I started using WordPress in 2008, and the way that modifications are made to themes have improved dramatically. I started customizing WordPress themes by copying all of the original code and adding my own code to it or forking, which was later replaced with the of utilization of child themes.

Today, I find that a child theme is not always necessary and simple modifications can be added quickly with the installation of a clever plugin. I’ll cover the different methods to use CSS in your theme and benefits for each.”

What’s one really cool thing people will discover during your session?

“CSS3 is responsible for adding a total of 147 new color names to the mere 17 that were previously available in prior versions of CSS! You can view the actual colors along with their color names here.

Do you have a good WordPress related story, anecdote or memory?

“Since I’m a total WordPress fangirl geek, I once made a couple of potato salads with the W logo in paprika on top for a WordPress Meetup potluck. They were awesome! I tweeted a photo of one to @photomatt and he actually retweeted it, I was stoked for days.”

What are you most looking forward to at WordCamp Toronto?

“I live in Los Angeles and I will be visiting Toronto for the first time. I’m super excited for the trip and I’d love to see an art museum while I am there, or just soak up the local culture. :)”
